Recalling that the Preamble of the United Nations Charter states,’We, the peoples of the United Nations determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war,…. to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person,….. and for these ends to practise tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours’.
Recalling further the Preamble of the Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO), which states that “since wars begin in the minds of men, it is the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed”.
Recalling also that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms that ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion’ (Article 18), ‘of opinion and expression’ (Article 19), and that education ‘should promote understanding tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups’ (Article 26).
Recognizing the Mission Statement of UNESCO on Higher Education that the Higher Education sector is to promote higher education in an increasingly knowledge-based society as a key factor for cultural, economic and social development, as an endogenous capacity-builder and as promoter of human rights, sustainable development, democracy, peace and justice.
Noting the relevant text of Agenda 21 (referring to an agenda for the 21st century) of United Nations with regard to sustainable development, in its social and economic dimensions in order to combat poverty, changing consumption patterns, population and demographic dynamics, promoting health, promoting sustainable settlement patterns and integrating environment and development into decision making by strengthening the roles of children and youth, women, NGOs, local authorities, business and workers.
Expressing full support to the UNESCO’s Declaration on a Culture of Peace which defines culture of Peace as a set of values, attitudes, traditions and modes of behavior and ways of life based on respect for life, ending of violence & promotion and practice of non-violence through education, dialogs and co-operations.
Integratingthe above consideration/objectives the Peace Society Worldwide hereby solemnly resolve and declare that all necessary positive measures should be taken by the States, Inter-governmental organizations, N.G.Os and Chamber of Commerces and Businesses for the economic development, enhancement of social progress and better standards of life by promoting and propagating the education for sustainable development and by strengthening and enhancing awareness of the rich diversity of religious, spiritual and cultural traditions in order to achieve well-being and harmony, mutual tolerance & respect, understanding, co-operation and co-existence and thereby attaining peace throughout the world.
